The Lagos State Government has announced a series of temporary road closures and traffic diversions across Lagos Island, scheduled for Monday, April 6, 2026, to accommodate the annual Fanti Carnival.

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture confirmed the measures on Friday, stating that the closures are necessary to ensure the safety of performers and the large crowds expected at the cultural festivities.

Key Traffic Restrictions
Starting from 7:00 a.m. on Monday, several major arteries leading toward the carnival’s central hub will be cordoned off. Motorists should expect disruptions and diversions at the following locations:

King George V Road: Restricted at the Mobil Filling Station junction.

Onikan Roundabout: Closed for traffic heading toward Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS).

Flagstaff House: Inbound access to TBS will be restricted.

Outer Marina: Closed by the State House for vehicles heading toward TBS.

Campbell Street: Restricted at the Old Defence Building.

Catholic Mission Street: Diverted at St. Nicholas Church.

Government Statement
In an official advisory released via the State Government’s X account, the Ministry emphasized that these measures are critical for a “secure and enjoyable experience.”

“The government regrets any inconvenience these closures may cause and urges residents to cooperate with traffic management officials deployed across the affected areas,” the statement read.

To mitigate the impact on commuters, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be deployed in high numbers to direct vehicular flow and guide motorists to alternative routes.

Commuter Guidance
With high-volume traffic anticipated, residents and commuters are strongly advised to:
Plan Ahead: Leave earlier than usual if your route involves Lagos Island.

Use Alternative Routes: Follow the directions provided by traffic officers on the ground.
Stay Informed: Monitor real-time traffic updates via official state channels.
