Telecoms giant MTN Nigeria has boldly come out to defend its corporate integrity following an ongoing storm of complaints from subscribers nationwide who accuse the network provider of illegally “stealing” and wiping out their data bundles.
Facing the heat at a public stakeholder forum themed “Data on Trial” in Ikoyi, Lagos, the General Manager of Network for MTN Nigeria, Michael Ndukwe, stood before a packed audience to address the severe network and data concerns being voiced by mobile users.
“MTN Is Pressing Our Neck”—Subscribers Cry Out
The public showdown, which was broadcast live on Channels Television, has triggered massive outrage across social media. As seen in the broadcast feed, furious subscribers did not mince words in the comment sections, with many lamenting that their network has been “terrible all day” and pleading with the telecom provider to “stop pressing our neck”.
The Honest Answer: Why Your Data Finishes Quickly
In a direct presentation slide titled “MTN is Stealing My Data…”, the management laid down the hard facts to explain the rapid data exhaustion, acknowledging that it understands the public frustration “especially right now when every single Naira counts”.
According to the official corporate explanation shown:
- No Automation Without Action: MTN strongly clarified that data is never deducted or taken from a user’s account without an active trigger or background action from the customer.
- The 4G/5G Double-Edged Sword: The company explained that while 4G and 5G networks make the internet experience significantly faster, richer, and smoother, the enhanced high quality automatically means much higher data consumption.
- Hidden Consumers: Every single megabyte (MB) is actively burned whenever users stream videos, scroll through media-heavy social feeds, download files, or share content. Background app requests and automatic cloud backups also silently drain data.
MTN Vows Transparency
Concluding the presentation, MTN Nigeria maintained its commitment to transparency and network excellence, insisting they are here to serve users and ensure they get 100% of the value they paid for, rather than taking from them.
