Long-distance train operator CrossCountry is resuming full service today, Monday, August 24, following major network-wide cancellations caused by a power cut at its main control centre in central Birmingham.
The power failure, which occurred on Sunday morning, offline key monitoring and operational management systems. This forced the operator to cancel almost all services across major national routes, impacting long-distance journeys including Edinburgh–Plymouth, Penzance–Leeds, Manchester–Birmingham, and Nottingham–Cardiff Central.
Key Summary & Passenger Guidance:
- Service Recovery: With power and control systems restored, a full timetable is set to operate today, Monday, August 24. However, passengers are strongly advised to check journey planners prior to departure.
- Ticket Validity: Tickets originally purchased for Sunday, August 23, remain valid for travel on CrossCountry services through Wednesday, August 26.
- Compensation & Refunds: Passengers whose journeys were delayed by 30 minutes or more can claim Delay Repay compensation. Passengers who chose not to travel due to the disruptions are eligible for a full refund at their point of purchase.
- Alternative Route Operations: Other train operators, including Chiltern Railways and LNER, instituted mutual ticket acceptance to help clear passenger backlogs caused by weekend football fixtures.
