Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has addressed the severe gridlock affecting commuters traveling out of and within Lagos, following a multi-truck accident at Kara Bridge coupled with active bridge repair works.

Key updates from the governor’s statement and traffic advisory include:

  • Cause of Gridlock: A multiple-truck accident occurred on Kara Bridge, severely compounding existing congestion caused by ongoing structural repair works.
  • Lane Reduction: Traffic within the work zone is currently narrowed from 4 lanes down to 2 lanes, causing significant slowdowns.
  • Duration of Repair Works: The ongoing repair project on the bridge is estimated to last for approximately two weeks, during which traffic will be channeled through the available side of the bridge.
  • Emergency Response: LASTMA officials, emergency response teams, and security agencies are deployed on the ground to manage vehicle movement and clear the bottleneck.
  • Advisory for Motorists: Commuters are urged to:
    • Leave early for their journeys to account for delays.
    • Use alternative routes where available.
    • Follow official traffic directions and cooperate with traffic officers on duty.
