The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued an urgent press release warning the public about an increase in fraudulent communications designed to misinform and hack personal accounts.

The alert, signed by Hakama Sidi Ali, Acting Director of Corporate Communications, on April 21, 2026, highlights that malicious actors are circulating fake emails and online messages purporting to be from the Bank. These messages often peddle false information regarding the Bank’s leadership, licensing, and policy issues in an attempt to prompt recipients to click dangerous links.

Official Security Advisory

The CBN has strongly advised all members of the public to take the following protective measures:

  • Refrain from clicking links or sharing personal information on any suspicious websites.
  • Verify all communications by visiting the official CBN website at www.cbn.gov.ng or through recognized media outlets.
  • Report any suspected fraudulent activity, including suspicious sites or messages, directly to law enforcement authorities.

Strengthening the Financial System

The Bank emphasized its commitment to safeguarding the Nigerian financial system and is actively working with relevant agencies to strengthen its cybersecurity frameworks. This warning follows a similar alert from the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) on April 15 regarding a “cybersecurity incident” involving unauthorized access to its own systems.
