JAPA’ CRISIS: US Moves to Slash Visa-Processing Embassies in Africa to Just 20, Raising Travel Fears

Millions of prospective African travelers, including thousands of Nigerians planning to Japa, are bracing for massive hurdles following a major policy shift by the United States government.

The US State Department has uncovered sweeping plans to drastically downsize the number of its embassies and consulates across the African continent that are permitted to process visas for foreign travelers.

According to an internal memo and top officials cited in a report by TheCable via the Associated Press (AP) the nearly 50 US diplomatic missions currently handling visa operations across Africa will be ruthlessly slashed down to just 20 in the coming weeks.

The Crackdown on Migration

The aggressive downsizing is reportedly part of the Trump administration’s broader policy to heavily tighten immigration borders and crack down heavily on travelers who overstay temporary visas.

A directive signed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will systematically convert remaining visa operations into regional “hubs,” severely limiting the consular powers of non-hub countries.

What This New Policy Means for Travel-Seekers:

  • Formidable Costs: Citizens in affected non-hub countries will now face the heavy financial burden of traveling out of their home nations just to attend ordinary visa interviews.
  • Lagos Survives as a Hub: Fortunately for local applicants, Lagos, Nigeria, has been designated as one of the 20 crucial hubs that will keep full visa-processing capabilities open.
  • Limited Local Services: Non-hub embassies will remain open but will be strictly restricted to emergency services, passport renewals for American citizens, and official diplomatic visas.

This looming disruption comes on top of already stringent barriers, including a controversial requirement for certain applicants to post up to $15,000 in bonds just to apply. While Nigeria remains a central hub, the consolidation is bound to cause unprecedented backlogs and massive delays for the entire West African sub-region.

With the US cutting visa processing centers down to 20, do you think this will slow down the heavy Japa wave out of Nigeria, or will people still find a way? Let us know in the comments below!
