The President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Tony Emoekpere, has taken a hard stance against the rising wave of infrastructure sabotage across the federation, linking it directly to the poor service quality currently plaguing subscribers.
Speaking during a recent broadcast on Channels Television, Emoekpere expressed deep concern over what he described as a culture of silence among Nigerians while critical assets are being destroyed in their backyard.
”We’re here complaining about poor service, but when we see people vandalising infrastructure, we don’t complain; when we see people cutting cables, we don’t report,” Emoekpere stated pointedly.
Key Highlights of the Briefing:
- Critical National Assets: The ATCON boss urged citizens to change their mindset and treat telecommunications equipment as “critical national assets” that belong to the public, not just the service providers.
- The Vandalism Link: He warned that the persistent damage to fiber optic cables and base stations remains a major bottleneck, frustrating the efforts of telcos to provide seamless network delivery.
- A Call to Action: Beyond just complaining about “dropped calls” and “slow data,” Nigerians are being challenged to become active whistleblowers to safeguard the infrastructure that powers their daily lives.
This development comes at a time when many Nigerians are lamenting the deteriorating quality of service (QoS) across various networks. However, according to ATCON, the solution lies not just in technology, but in the hands of the community.
