Gas Shortage Triggers National Grid Outages
Ikeja Electric (IE) has formally apologized to its customers following widespread power disruptions caused by a significant drop in power generation on Nigeria’s national grid.
Key Highlights of the Crisis
Cause of Blackouts: The utility company attributed the ongoing outages to severe gas supply constraints, which have crippled thermal power plants across the country.
Impact on Generation: National electricity output reportedly plummeted to approximately 3,940 MW as of March 5, 2026, with several units forced to shut down due to inadequate fuel.
Resulting Measures: This generation shortfall has led to increased load shedding across various feeders within the Ikeja Electric network, affecting both residential and business areas.
Ongoing Efforts: Management at Ikeja Electric assured the public that they are working closely with other sector stakeholders to stabilize the grid and restore normal supply.
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) confirmed that thermal plants are currently receiving only about 40% of the gas required for optimal operation, further exacerbating the nation’s energy challenges.
