Pope Leo XIV Robert Francis Prevost Becomes First American to Lead the Catholic Church

In a swift and historic decision, the College of Cardinals has elected Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. The 69-year-old Chicago native, renowned for his pastoral outreach and reformist leadership, will now be known as Pope Leo XIV—marking the first time an American has ascended to the papacy.

This election, completed within just one day of deliberation, signals a continuation of the progressive, inclusive direction established by Pope Francis. A dual citizen of the United States and Peru, Leo XIV embodies a bridge between continents, cultures, and ideologies—uniting North and South America, tradition and transformation.

A Name with Meaning, A Vision with Purpose;

Choosing the name Leo XIV, Pope Prevost revives a title last used more than 120 years ago, hinting at a return to enduring values while embracing the Church’s modern mission. He is widely seen as a centrist-progressive voice, known for championing the rights of migrants, environmental sustainability, and the dignity of the poor.

From Chicago to the Chair of St. Peter

Born in 1955 to parents of Spanish and Franco-Italian descent, Robert Prevost was raised in Chicago. He earned a degree in Mathematics before entering the Augustinian novitiate in 1977. He later completed theological studies in Chicago and obtained a doctorate in Canon Law from the prestigious Angelicum in Rome.

Driven by a missionary calling, Prevost dedicated over a decade to service in Trujillo, Peru, where he wore many hats—parish administrator, professor, judicial vicar, and formation director especially among underserved communities.

His leadership path included roles as Provincial Prior in Chicago and a rare two-term election as Prior General of the Augustinian Order (2001–2013). In 2014, Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Administrator of Chiclayo, Peru, and later its Bishop. He also briefly served as administrator of Callao.

A Trusted Voice in the Vatican;

In January 2023, Prevost was appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America two high-profile Vatican positions that positioned him at the heart of Church governance. He was created Cardinal in 2024 and elevated to the Order of Bishops in February 2025.

A visible presence in Vatican affairs, he participated in major synods and ceremonies, and notably celebrated Mass with Pope Francis during the Jubilee of the Armed Forces earlier this year. His leadership and spiritual devotion were evident as he led global prayers during the Pope’s recent health challenges.

A New Chapter for a Global Church

With his deep theological grounding, cross-cultural experience, and unwavering dedication to service, Pope Leo XIV is poised to guide the Catholic Church into a new era of unity, compassion, and purpose.

Summary:
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as Pope Leo XIV, becoming the first American and 267th pontiff of the Catholic Church.
