The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has made public the results of the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates. Among the 1,613,733 candidates who took the exam, the results of 262,803 candidates are being withheld due to suspected examination malpractice.
The Head of Nigeria’s WAEC Office, Patrick Areghan, announced this development and also hinted at his forthcoming retirement. Notably, there has been an improvement in the pass rate, with 84.38% of the candidates obtaining credit and above in at least five subjects, regardless of English Language or Mathematics. Moreover, 79.81% of all candidates achieved credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
Comparatively, in the previous year, 76.36% of the 1,601,047 candidates who sat for the examination obtained credits and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
The release of the 2023 results brings hope to aspiring tertiary institution students, especially those who participated in the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and declared they were awaiting their SSCE results in their application forms.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) conducted the UTME for admission seekers nationwide in May, and numerous tertiary institutions have since initiated their admission processes.
