In an official policy update issued by the UK Home Office, international students from Botswana, Mauritius, and Tunisia can now apply for a UK Student or Child Student visa without submitting proof of maintenance funds upfront.

The three nations are the only African countries currently included under the UK’s Differential Evidence Requirement framework.

Documentary Exemption vs. Financial Exemption

The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) department emphasized that this arrangement serves strictly as a documentary exemption, not a financial waiver:

  • Upfront Paperwork Waived: Eligible applicants from Botswana, Mauritius, and Tunisia do not need to attach bank statements or proof of funds to their initial visa application.

  • Right to Request: UKVI reserves the full right to request financial proof from any applicant during the decision-making process.

  • Must Still Meet Criteria: Students must actually hold the required funds in acceptable bank accounts for at least 28 consecutive days, even if they aren’t submitting the paperwork initially.

Where Does This Leave Nigerian Students?

Unlike their counterparts in Botswana, Mauritius, and Tunisia, applicants from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, and other non-listed African nations are NOT exempt. Nigerian students must continue to submit full financial documentation upfront alongside their Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).

How Much Money Do Students Normally Need?

For applicants required to show proof of funds (or if requested by UKVI), students must demonstrate enough money to cover tuition for one academic year plus living expenses for up to 9 months:

Location of Study Monthly Requirement 9-Month Maintenance Total
In London £1,529 per month £13,761
Outside London £1,171 per month £10,539

(Note: Additional funds are required for applicants traveling with dependants—£845/month in London and £680/month outside London per dependant).

General Exceptions for All Applicants

Regardless of nationality, any student is automatically exempt from providing proof of maintenance funds if:

  1. They have been living in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 consecutive months before the date of application.

  2. They are applying as a Student Union Sabbatical Officer or a doctor/dentist in a recognized foundation programme.
