QUEST FOR JUSTICE: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Cries Out Over Son’s Death, Accuses Euracare Hospital of Negligence and Obstruction

Globally acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has publicly shared her profound grief and anger following the tragic death of her young son, Nkanu Nnamdi.

In a highly emotional and detailed statement posted to her official social media page, the author openly accused Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos of mismanaging her child’s medical care and actively attempting to block a public investigation into his passing.

A Mother’s Heartbreaking Loss

Adichie made public a formal letter dated April 16, 2026, which she had previously sent to the Chairman of the Board of Directors at Euracare. In the letter, she affectionately remembers her older twin son, Nkanu—whom she fondly called “KanKan” and her “diokpala”—describing him as a boy of unusual emotional intelligence, charm, and joy.

Expressing the shattering weight of the loss, Adichie shared how the tragedy has completely upended her family’s life, leaving behind an empty highchair and an inconsolable surviving twin brother.

The Legal Battle Over the Inquest

The core of the current controversy centers around a legal push to uncover the truth behind the toddler’s death. According to Adichie:

  • The Initial Request: Euracare Hospital originally applied for a public inquest in January, claiming they wanted to clear up “rumours of negligence”.
  • Alleged Obstruction: Since making that initial application, the author states that the hospital has continually stalled, muddied, and obfuscated the process.
  • The High Court Move: Most egregiously, Adichie reveals that Euracare has now approached a High Court in an explicit attempt to stop the inquest from happening entirely.

“An inquest is a public judicial inquiry designed to establish the circumstances surrounding a death,” Adichie wrote. “It is not a trial. It is not a claim for damages. It is simply a search for the truth. If Euracare cares about the truth, then why create delays and distractions and now, finally, try to stop an inquest?”

Allegations of Threats and Coercion

The literary icon further alleged that a high-ranking individual within the hospital’s ownership hierarchy delivered a manipulative and implicitly threatening message to her family. The individual reportedly warned that Adichie should avoid court because her name “may be dragged in the mud” during a legal battle.

Responding fiercely to the alleged intimidation, Adichie stated that the hospital underestimates how deeply she loves her child. Vowing that her quest for legal accountability will not be derailed, she concluded: “They can drag all they wish in the mud, but our quest for justice will continue”.

The public disclosure has sent shockwaves through the country, drawing immense sympathy and solidarity from thousands of well-wishers and prominent figures globally who are standing with the family during this dark hour.

This is a deeply sobering and heartbreaking situation. What are your thoughts on the call for a full public inquest into patient care at private health institutions in Nigeria? Let us know in the comments below.
