The Federal Government has approved the introduction of an alphanumeric digital postcode system aimed at improving Nigeria’s addressing structure and enhancing delivery services across the country.
The approval was granted by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) as part of ongoing efforts to modernise Nigeria’s postal system, strengthen digital infrastructure, and support the growth of the nation’s digital economy.
Speaking on the initiative, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, explained that the new system will introduce a Geographic Information System (GIS)-enabled framework that assigns a unique combination of letters and numbers to specific locations across the country.
According to the Minister, the system will make it easier to accurately identify homes, businesses, and public facilities, thereby improving the efficiency of address location and service delivery nationwide.
The project will be implemented in collaboration with the Nigerian Postal Service under the leadership of the Postmaster General, Tola Odeyemi.
Nigeria currently operates a six-digit numeric postal code system, but many areas still face challenges such as poorly defined street names and unnumbered houses. These limitations often make it difficult for delivery services, emergency responders, and businesses to locate addresses accurately.
With the introduction of the digital postcode system, every location in Nigeria will be assigned a unique digital code that can be easily identified on digital platforms and mapping systems.
The initiative is expected to improve mail and parcel delivery, support e-commerce growth, enhance emergency response services, and strengthen national planning and service delivery.
The move represents another step by the Federal Government to build a more efficient, digitally connected society and improve access to essential services for citizens across Nigeria.
