The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has dismissed social media claims that Amoxicillin has been secretly banned in Nigeria, describing the reports as false and misleading.
In a statement posted on its official X account on Monday, February 9, 2026, the agency clarified that there is no nationwide ban on the antibiotic. NAFDAC explained that while it occasionally issues safety alerts or recalls for specific substandard batches, these actions do not amount to a prohibition of the drug.
NAFDAC said the viral video alleging a secret ban misrepresents its regulatory processes and could cause unnecessary panic among healthcare providers and patients.
“NAFDAC has not banned Amoxicillin in Nigeria, either secretly or openly. As a responsible regulatory authority, the Agency publicly notifies Nigerians of any regulatory actions through official channels,” the statement read.
The agency noted that its alerts typically specify product names, batch numbers, manufacturers and corrective actions. It cited recent recalls of certain Amoxicillin brands in 2025 due to quality concerns but stressed these were targeted actions, not a blanket ban.
Why it matters:
Amoxicillin is a widely used antibiotic for treating infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis and ear infections. False claims of a ban could disrupt treatment, fuel panic buying and undermine trust in health institutions.
NAFDAC urged Nigerians to rely only on verified information from its official platforms.
