Putin must agree Ukraine ceasefire in 10 or 12 days, says Trump

Trump revealed the shortened timeline at a Scottish press conference following talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He said he would formally confirm the deadline early next week and reiterated his readiness to levy “100% tax” on nations that continue trading with Russia, effectively forcing them to choose cheaper suppliers.

  • The 100% tariff would price Russian goods—and any country’s goods that trade with it—out of the U.S. market.
  • U.S. businesses would likely source alternatives, depriving Russia and its trading partners of revenue.
  • Trump emphasized that harsher measures are justified by the absence of meaningful ceasefire progress.

Trump expressed dismay at nightly missile strikes on Ukrainian cities, noting a stark contrast between Vladimir Putin’s conciliatory rhetoric in private and his actions on the battlefield. He lamented, “We were going to have a ceasefire and maybe peace… and all of a sudden you have missiles flying into Kyiv.” Frustrated by repeated setbacks, Trump announced he was “no longer interested in talks,” a declaration that dominated Russian media headlines.

  • The Kremlin has remained muted on the revised deadline. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov previously called Trump’s 50day ultimatum “very serious” but asked for time to assess it.
  • Russian MP Andrey Gurulyov dismissed U.S. threats, insisting Russia relies on the strength of its weapons, principles, and will.
  • Ukrainian presidential chief of staff Andriy Yermak praised Trump for delivering “a clear message of peace through strength,” arguing that Putin “respects only power.”

After three and a half years of war, key Russian demands remain incompatible with Ukrainian and Western positions:

  • Ukraine must abandon NATO ambitions.
  • Ukraine must drastically reduce its military capacity.
  • Ukraine must declare permanent neutrality.

None of these preconditions are acceptable to Kyiv or its allies, making any agreement within twelve days extraordinarily unlikely.

Russia has intensified its summer offensive in eastern Ukraine, unleashing swarms of drones and missiles on civilian infrastructure. Meanwhile, three rounds of Turkey‐hosted talks have secured prisoner exchanges but failed to yield a ceasefire. Both sides remain entrenched in a protracted, bloody stalemate.

With Trump’s 12‐day ultimatum looming, the prospects for a swift ceasefire appear dim. Deep strategic divides, incompatible demands, and ongoing military offensives suggest that without a significant shift in either side’s stance, the conflict will rage on beyond this latest deadline.
