Senate Leadership Showdown: Akpabio Issues Ultimatum to Oshiomhole Over New Standing Orders

Tensions within the Red Chamber reached a boiling point today, May 6, 2026, as Senate President Godswill Akpabio issued a stern warning to Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North) during a heated debate over a controversial amendment to the Senate Standing Orders.

The exchange occurred after Oshiomhole voiced a vigorous protest against a new rule that effectively bars first-term senators and those who did not hold specific leadership positions in previous assemblies from contesting the Senate Presidency or Deputy Senate Presidency in the 2027 General Elections.

The Conflict: New Rules for 2027

The proposed amendment to Rule 3(2) of the Senate Standing Orders aims to “preserve the tradition of the Senate” by ensuring only ranking members with deep legislative experience can lead the chamber. However, critics argue the move is a strategic “gatekeeping” measure designed to eliminate potential rivals.

  • Targeted Figures: The rule is widely seen as a preemptive strike against high-profile senators-to-be or current members with executive experience, such as Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma (who is rumored to have Senate ambitions after his governorship) and Senator Oshiomhole himself.

  • The Protest: Oshiomhole characterized the amendment as “undemocratic” and “discriminatory,” arguing that it creates an artificial hierarchy that prevents the most capable leaders from emerging.

Akpabio’s Ultimatum

Following an intense back-and-forth where Oshiomhole was ruled out of order multiple times, Senate President Akpabio delivered a sharp rebuke to the former Edo State Governor:

“Senator Oshiomhole, for the last time, if you become unruly in the Senate, we will use the same rules to remove you from the Senate.”

Akpabio emphasized that the Senate is governed by established protocols and that no individual, regardless of their political stature, is above the “sanctity of the floor.”

Implications for the 10th Senate

The incident highlights a deepening fracture within the All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus in the Senate. Analysts suggest this power struggle is the opening salvo of the 2027 political cycle, as various factions begin to maneuver for control of the National Assembly.
