How Political Rivalry Left Ogun’s Multimillion-Naira Gateway Hotel Ota in Complete Ruins

The Gateway Hotel, Ota—once a premier 5-star hospitality landmark sitting strategically near the Sango tollgate on the Lagos-Ogun border—has fallen into severe desolation and decay. Built as a symbol of regional economic equity, the 350-room edifice has been rendered moribund primarily due to a protracted political feud between successive state governors, leaving a multimillion-naira public asset stripped by looters and swallowed by overgrown jungle.

1. Historical Significance & Scale

  • Conception & Vision: Built in 1982 under the administration of Chief Olabisi Onabanjo (Ogun State’s first democratically elected governor under the Unity Party of Nigeria), the hotel was designed to distribute economic infrastructure across the state’s three senatorial districts.

  • The Three Flagships: While Ijebu-Ode’s location became Equity Resort Hotel and Abeokuta’s location transformed into Park Inn by Radisson, the Ota location was the largest of the three.

  • World-Class Facilities: Sitting on a sprawling landscape, the hotel featured 350 rooms and luxury suites, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, three major conference halls, a main banquet hall, a cinema, shopping arcades, a penthouse, and parking for over 1,000 vehicles. It also served politically to douse agitations from Ota residents seeking to merge with Lagos State.

2. The Concession & The Political Rift

  • The Daniel Era (2003–2011): Citing severe operational losses—noting that the three state hotels had generated only ₦27 million since inception—Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel concessioned the properties to private operators for 25 years.

  • The Ota Sub-Lease: The Ota facility was concessioned to MIDC Limited, which subsequently sub-leased 2.153 hectares to ARTEE Industries Limited (operators of Park ’n’ Shop) for 23 years to build a modern commercial shopping mall. Former Gateway Holdings MD, Gboyega Isiaka, acknowledged that MIDC struggled to procure execution capital, prompting the joint arrangement.

  • The Amosun Cancellation (2011–2019): Upon taking office, Governor Ibikunle Amosun set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry into privatized assets. Based on the February 2012 report—which stated MIDC failed to execute refurbishments within the agreed 18-month window—Amosun terminated the concession.

3. The Aftermath: Decay, Looting, and Total Abandonment

Following the cancellation of the concession, the property was left completely unmanaged and unsecured:

  • Systematic Looting: Miscreants stripped the entire 350-room complex. Air conditioners, ceiling fans, electrical wiring, decorative hall lights, doors, window frames, and structural fittings were stolen.

  • Physical Ruin: The main cinema hall was reduced to a dark, dusty shell, while the external grounds were overgrown with thick bush, turning the facility into a hideout for illegal occupants and miscreants.

  • Local Economic Loss: Community leaders highlighted that the collapse wiped out hundreds of direct hospitality jobs, theatrical/musical event hubs, and secondary supply chain opportunities for local agricultural and dry-cleaning vendors.

4. Current Position of the State Government

  • Search for PPP Investors: Ogun State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Oluwatoyin Taiwo, confirmed that official physical assessments revealed near-total destruction of internal facilities.

  • OgunInvest Engagement: The administration under Governor Dapo Abiodun has directed OgunInvest (the state’s investment promotion agency) to seek credible private sector investors to enter a fresh Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to completely rebuild and commercialize the site.
