A viral post shared by a Lekki Phase 1 resident has drawn massive public attention and sparked outrage regarding the billing practices of the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC).

Key details of the incident include:

  • The Core Dispute: The property owner installed an 18kW solar power system, reducing their reliance on the public grid to a secondary backup. Following the shift, EKEDC monitoring teams reportedly intensified visits, flagging the sharply reduced grid consumption.
  • “Loss of Revenue” (LOR) Fine: EKEDC officials served the customer a disconnection notice for an outstanding ₦112,606 billed under “Loss of Revenue,” claiming that low meter activity indicated a faulty meter.
  • The Confrontation: The resident stated that when meters were tested by switching back to the grid, they recorded consumption normally. However, utility personnel allegedly insisted that the company was losing revenue and needed to recover it.
  • Public Outrage & DisCo Pressure: The case has triggered fierce online criticism, with many Nigerians highlighting a growing trend where Distribution Companies (DisCos) penalize customers who adopt alternative energy sources like solar to escape erratic grid supply and high tariffs. The consumer has opted to wait for formal grid disconnection before escalating the matter to regulatory authorities.
