The Federal Government has officially confirmed a case of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, following laboratory tests.

Key details surrounding the confirmed case and emergency response include:

  • Patient Profile & Origin: The infected individual is a woman who recently arrived in Nigeria on an international flight from Uganda. She spent several days receiving medical care at a private hospital in the FCT before laboratory confirmation. She has since been moved to an isolation facility for specialized treatment.
  • Contact Tracing Underway: Health authorities have activated a rapid containment response. 44 close contacts have already been identified for tracking and monitoring, including healthcare workers, fellow patients, caregivers, and travel contacts.
  • Coordinated Public Health Response: The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, led by Coordinating Minister Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, alongside the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and the FCT Health Services Secretariat, is spearheading containment measures, stepping up surveillance, and supporting the private hospital with infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols.
  • National Health Alert: Public and private healthcare facilities nationwide have been placed on high alert to swiftly isolate suspected cases, enforce strict infection prevention protocols, and immediately report potential infections to public health authorities.

The NCDC toll-free emergency call centre is active 24/7 on 6232 for information and reporting of suspected cases.
