CYBER ALERT: Hackers Launch 2,000 Attacks On Nigeria’s Data Protection Agency In Just Seven Days

In a alarming revelation that exposes the vulnerability of Nigeria’s digital space, the nation’s apex data watchdog, the National Data Protection Commission (NDPC), has confirmed that its central systems were hit by over 2,000 cyberattacks within a single week.

The startling disclosure was made by the NDPC during a high-level technical session held in Abuja, which brought together government IT administrators from various ministries and parastatals

The Anatomy of the Attacks

While NDPC officials quickly reassured the public that the unauthorized intrusions were successfully managed and contained without a catastrophic data breach, security experts warn that the sheer volume of hits reflects an aggressive, sustained onslaught targeted at the country’s critical public digital infrastructure.

Surprisingly, officials noted that these recurring cyber incidents are not always the result of highly sophisticated, Hollywood-style hacking techniques. Instead, they frequently exploit basic system limitations, operational gaps, and weak security signals within government organizations.

Key Highlights From the Abuja Briefing:

  • Sustained Onslaught: Over 2,000 distinct digital attacks were logged in just one week, proving that government databases are under constant surveillance by malicious actors.
  • Interdependent Risks: Nigeria’s public digital ecosystem relies heavily on shared vendors and third-party processors, meaning a single security loophole in one agency can compromise platforms across financial services, telecom infrastructure, and private healthcare.
  • The Looming Threat to Businesses: Industry analysts have quickly issued warnings following the report, stating: “If regulators who guard the law can face cyberattacks on this scale, know that your private business is absolutely not immune.”

Who Owns Your Health Data?

The structural flaws exposed by the NDPC raid are causing massive panic, particularly within the healthcare sector where sensitive patient data constantly flows across telemedicine platforms and digital health systems.

To address these growing anxieties, a major collaborative industry dialogue titled “Who Owns Your Health Data In Nigeria?” has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at 2:00 PM WAT on LinkedIn Live, aiming to dissect data privacy rights and corporate accountability during this cyber wave.
