The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered and destroyed a sprawling 30-hectare cannabis sativa (Indian hemp) plantation hidden within a forest in Odukpani Local Government Area, Cross River State. Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Calabar, the NDLEA State Commander, Mrs. Rachel Umebuali, confirmed the operation, noting that several suspects linked to the illicit plantation were apprehended.
She raised concerns over the active support drug traffickers receive from local residents, who often shield them from law enforcement for financial gains.Between January and June this year, the Cross River Command seized 6,716.8kg of assorted illicit drugs, including:
– 2,935kg of cannabis sativa
– Methamphetamine
– Psychotropic substances
– Cannabis mixtures
– Cocaine
– Heroin
– Opioids
– Barbiturates
– Ecstasy
Additionally, 163.9kg of cannabis seeds were recovered from the destroyed farm. During the same period, 191 individuals were arrested for drug-related offenses, with 15 already convicted. Mrs. Umebuali lamented that most arrested drug dealers are not indigenes of the state but infiltrate communities, offering money to locals in exchange for protection. She also highlighted the NDLEA’s proactive efforts in drug prevention, disclosing that the agency conducted 191 sensitisation programmes from January to June. These outreach efforts covered schools, markets, religious institutions, and NGOs, aimed at curbing drug abuse across the state.
This year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was marked with strong advocacy themed “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention,” supported by Cross River State First Lady, Mrs. Eyoanwan Otu. Despite its efforts, Umebuali noted that underfunding and logistical challenges remain major obstacles to the command’s operations.
Broader Context
A recent joint study by the NDLEA and the Federal Ministry of Education revealed disturbing trends in Lagos State, with 13.6% of secondary school students experimenting with drugs and 6.9% actively using them. In response, the Lagos State Ministry of Health launched an extensive awareness campaign on June 26, 2025, to tackle the rising substance abuse among youths and vulnerable groups.
