Delta leaders align with ruling party to ensure stronger federal ties and accelerated development.
In a bold political realignment, former Governor of Delta State and ex-vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has officially confirmed his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the strategic need to secure better opportunities for the people of Delta State.
Speaking at a grand reception organized by the APC’s national leadership to welcome the defectors in Asaba, Okowa described the move as “a necessary change of path” to ensure Delta’s access to national goodwill, resources, and federal influence.
“It wasn’t an easy decision, but one driven by the greater good,” Okowa stated. “As governor for eight years without federal support, I saw firsthand the developmental setbacks caused by political disconnection. This step is about putting Delta first.”
Strengthening Ties with the Federal Government;
Okowa emphasized that the state’s current leadership, under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, needs direct access to the central government to continue delivering impactful projects and programs. He reiterated that Delta is a major contributor to Nigeria’s wealth and deserves a fair share of national resources.
“Governor Sheriff is working tirelessly for our people. However, to sustain progress, we must be aligned with the power and resources in Abuja,” he added.
A Historic Political Shift in Delta State:
This significant defection includes Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Okowa, and multiple serving national and state lawmakers, signaling a powerful realignment in Delta’s political landscape.
Observers say this move could reshape the dynamics of the South-South region ahead of the 2027 general elections, positioning the APC for greater influence across the oil-rich zone.
