In a video seen by SaharaReporters on Sunday, the protesters complained about the rising cost of housing in the area, describing it as unaffordable for the masses.
A statement by the Lagos Island chapter of TIB posted on X on Sunday said, “The Lagos Island chapter of the TIB joined residents in a protest against unaffordable cost of housing.
“No doubt, this is a national call to enforce housing right. Housing is a fundamental human right, and the government has a duty to ensure it is available to all citizens.”
Some of the places the procession took the protesters were Adeniji Adele, Tom Jones, Tinubu, Igbosere, Catholic Mission and Campbell.
In September 2023, Vice President Kashim Shettima said to fix the challenges in the housing sector, Nigeria would require not less than N21 trillion.
At the groundbreaking of the construction of a 500-unit housing estate in Sokoto, northwest Nigeria, Shettima said: “Nigeria has a deficit of 28 million houses and we will need N21 trillion to meet our housing needs. This step taken by the governor is highly commendable and worthy of emulation by other state governments.”
