Through the AI Collaborative for Food Security initiative by Google.org, $25 million will fund partnerships with researchers and nonprofits to develop AI tools that detect early hunger signs, enhance crop resilience, and provide advisory support for smallholder farmers. This aims to build adaptive, resilient food systems capable of withstanding Africa’s climate and economic challenges.

To bridge digital language gaps, Google awarded $3 million to the Masakhane Research Foundation, a pan-African collective advancing AI for over 40 indigenous languages. The funding will enable the creation of high-quality datasets, machine translation, and voice tools to empower millions to access the internet in their nation.

Google will back over 100 early-stage AI-driven startups in agriculture, healthcare, and education, blending philanthropic funding, venture capital, mentorship, and responsible AI guidance to scale local innovations.Located in Accra, this hub will focus on AI literacy, research, and community collaboration, integrating social impact and cultural priorities into technology development.

To meet growing skill demands, Google is providing:

– 100,000 Google Career Certificate scholarships in Ghana for self-paced training in AI, data analytics, cybersecurity, and more.

– $7 million to advance AI education in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana, funding localized AI curricula, digital safety programs, and institutional support.

Two $1 million grants will fund:

– Applied AI research and training at the African Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AfriDSAI), University of Pretoria.

– Foundational AI research by postgraduate students at the Wits Machine Intelligence and Neural Discovery (MIND) Institute in South Africa.

Commitment to African Innovation

James Manyika, Google’s SVP for Research, Labs, and Technology & Society, emphasized:

“Africa is home to some of the most important and inspiring work in AI today. We are committed to supporting the next wave of innovation through long-term investment and local partnerships.”

Yossi Matias, Google’s VP of Engineering and Research, added: “By building with local communities and institutions, we’re supporting solutions rooted in Africa’s realities with global impact.”

This investment builds on Google’s prior initiatives in Africa, including AI-powered maternal health dashboards in Nigeria and Ghana, wildfire alert systems in East Africa, and regional language models developed by its teams in Accra and Nairobi.
