A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has sentenced popular TikTok influencer, Murja Kunya, to six months in prison for abusing the Nigerian currency, the Naira.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kano Zonal Directorate, secured the conviction on Wednesday, May 20, 2025, before Justice Simon Amobeda.
Kunya was initially arrested in January 2025 for violating the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which criminalizes the abuse and mutilation of the Naira. Her offense involved spraying Naira notes for entertainment purposes while lodged at Tahir Guest Palace, a hotel in Kano.
Following her arrest, the social media personality was granted administrative bail by the EFCC, pending her formal arraignment. However, she absconded and failed to appear in court, prompting a manhunt.
After weeks of surveillance and investigation, EFCC operatives re-arrested Kunya on March 16, 2025.
Upon her arraignment on May 20, 2025, she pleaded guilty to the amended one-count charge and was consequently sentenced to six months imprisonment.
