The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing his two years in office as a period of widespread hardship and failure.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the opposition party characterized Tinubu’s leadership under the All Progressives Congress (APC) as disastrous and deeply distressing for Nigerians.
“Under Tinubu, the cost of living has skyrocketed beyond the reach of ordinary citizens,” the PDP stated. “The Naira has plummeted from #167 to over #1,600 per dollar, petrol prices have surged from #87 to over #1,000 per liter, inflation nears 40%, youth unemployment exceeds 42%, and the country faces acute food shortages and rising insecurity.”
The statement further alleged that over 600,000 Nigerians have been killed by terrorists and bandits since Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, citing government negligence and a failure to protect lives and property.
In addition, the PDP lamented the exodus of multinational companies due to economic instability and poor infrastructure. They accused the Tinubu administration of compounding the nation’s woes through excessive taxation, unchecked foreign borrowing which now totals over #182 trillion and mismanagement of resources without tangible benefits for the populace.
According to the PDP, while citizens suffer, the APC-led government prioritizes opulence, spending on private jets, luxury mansions, and extravagant foreign trips over meaningful development.
The party called on President Tinubu to abandon what it described as misleading performance claims and to confront the reality of widespread public discontent. It urged the president to use the remaining two years of his term to:
Tackle insecurity decisively
Reevaluate harsh economic policies
Reduce the cost of petroleum products
Stabilize the Naira
Appoint competent economic managers
“The nation is in pain. Nigerians are hurting. It’s time for real leadership, not empty rhetoric,” the PDP concluded.
