Air Peace Aircraft Strikes Antelope at Abuja Airport Grounds Flight and Disrupts Operations

An Air Peace aircraft was grounded on the runway of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, after colliding with a large antelope while taxiing, resulting in significant flight disruptions.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), through its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Achimugu explained that such rare but unpredictable wildlife incidents are among the challenges that can cause sudden operational delays.

“Monitoring reports yesterday indicated that an Air Peace aircraft ran into a large antelope, decimating the animal and leaving the aircraft on ground (AOG),” he stated. “As a result, flights scheduled for that aircraft were disrupted, and understandably, passengers were frustrated.”

Achimugu emphasized that while the situation was beyond the airline’s control, Air Peace is still obligated to communicate clearly with affected passengers, provide timely refunds, and offer necessary support.

He further warned that the NCAA will not hesitate to impose sanctions if the airline fails to meet its responsibilities under the current circumstances.
