The Vatican has officially announced that the conclave to elect a successor to Pope Francis will commence on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.
Cardinals from around the world are expected to gather at the Vatican to begin the sacred and highly confidential process of selecting the 267th leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
This development follows the death of Pope Francis, who led the global Catholic community for twelve years. His passing has naturally shifted global attention to the critical task of choosing his successor.
In accordance with centuries-old tradition, the Church convenes a conclave following the death or resignation of a pope. It will be recalled that Pope Francis himself was elected during a conclave after Pope Benedict XVI made history in 2013 by resigning due to age-related health issues marking the first papal resignation in nearly six centuries.
The coming conclave is expected to be a solemn and momentous event, as the College of Cardinals undertakes the significant responsibility of discerning and electing the next pontiff to guide the Catholic Church through a new chapter in its history.
