A French court in Paris has found cement giant Lafarge guilty of financing terrorist groups. After it was revealed, the company paid approximately $6.5 million between 2013 and 2014 to sustain its business activities in war-torn Syria.
The judgment, delivered on Monday, marks a historic legal milestone the first time a company in France has been convicted for terrorism financing.
According to the ruling, the payments were made during a period when extremist groups, including ISIS, had taken control of large parts of Syria and Iraq, declaring a so-called caliphate. Lafarge reportedly authorized the funds to secure operational access and maintain its presence in the region despite escalating conflict.
The case highlights the growing global scrutiny on corporate conduct in high-risk environments, reinforcing the expectation that businesses uphold ethical standards even amid instability.
