The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 15 July 2025, as a public holiday to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in a London hospital after a prolonged illness.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement released on Monday. The declaration follows President Bola Tinubu’s approval and forms part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning period.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” Tunji-Ojo stated. He urged Nigerians to use the day to reflect on Buhari’s life, leadership, and values by promoting peace, patriotism, and national cohesion in line with his vision for a united and prosperous country.
The late President’s body will be flown back to Nigeria for burial on Tuesday in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State. During the mourning period, national flags are to fly at half-mast as a mark of respect.
The Federal Government expressed its deepest condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
