A key figure in the transformation of Lagos State’s transportation landscape has officially exited the executive cabinet to pursue a legislative career. The Special Adviser on Transportation to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced their resignation yesterday, marking a strategic pivot toward federal representation.

The departure follows years of service under the state’s THEMES+ Agenda, a policy framework that has seen significant investment in rail, bus rapid transit, and water transportation infrastructure.

Answering the “Higher Call”

In a statement released following the resignation, the former Special Adviser expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve at the state level while outlining a new vision for the Lagos Island Federal Constituency II.

“After deep reflection and wide consultations, I am answering a higher call to represent the good people of Lagos Island Federal Constituency II in the House of Representatives,” the statement read. “This next chapter is about stronger representation, purposeful legislation, and delivering real impact.”

Legacy in Transportation

The outgoing aide was a central part of the administration’s efforts to decongest Lagos roads and modernize the commute for millions of residents. During their tenure, the Ministry of Transportation focused on:

  • Intermodal Connectivity: Integrating the Blue and Red rail lines with existing road and water networks.

  • Tech-Driven Enforcement: Strengthening the use of digital tools for traffic management and revenue collection.

  • Infrastructure Sustainability: Overseeing the rehabilitation of key transport corridors across the metropolis.

The Road to the House of Reps

By seeking a seat in the House of Representatives, the former cabinet member is moving from policy execution to policy formulation. The campaign for Lagos Island Federal Constituency II is expected to focus on bringing “real impact” through legislative action that addresses the specific urban challenges of the Lagos Island community.

Strategic Timing

The resignation comes as political activities intensify ahead of upcoming legislative contests. Political analysts suggest that the move signals a desire to bring “Lagos-style” executive efficiency to the National Assembly, focusing on laws that could further decentralize infrastructure funding and improve urban governance.

The Governor’s Response: While a successor has yet to be formally named, Governor Sanwo-Olu is expected to appoint a replacement who can maintain the momentum of the current transportation reforms as the administration enters its next phase of project delivery.
